Twitter CEO Elon Musk is expected to lay off half of the social media giant’s staff, eliminating around 3,700 jobs, in an effort to reduce costs after acquiring the company last week for $44 billion, according to a report from Bloomberg.The report said that Musk plans to lay off staffers Friday, according to a story from Axios, and staffers who are not laid off will be required to work in the San Francisco office. Employees had been allowed to work from home, a policy that was adopted after the pandemic began.A source told Axios that Musk wanted to pursue the layoffs last week and cautioned that Twitter’s plans have already changed multiple times and could change again. The story said that Musk has yet to communicate directly with his staff and has abruptly canceled several staff meetings . The reported layoffs follow Musk ’s firing of top Twitter executives upon his takeover of the company, including CEO Parag Agrawal , CFO Ned Segal and Vijaya Gadde , the company’s head of legal policy , trust and safety.
