NYC Salary Transparency Law Exposes What Amex JPMorgan Pay
With New York City’s salary transparency law going into effect on Nov. 1, workers now have insight into the pay ranges for jobs at leading companies — including Amazon, American Express, JPMorgan and Verizon.
Annual salaries for a job can vary as widely as $147,000 to $466,500, such as that for a PricewaterhouseCoopers communications director in New York . For the same position in Colorado, PwC will pay $129,000 to $409,500.
An analysis of the job listings by Fortune magazine finds that most of the corporations that have complied with the new law include the disclaimer that the ranges are merely guidelines.
Many of the companies also presage that the top salaries in their series are not typically given to new hires . Those that pay bonuses or commission are not, at least at present, listing those dollar figures or percentages.
Employment attorney Domenique Camacho Moran says the ranges that employers must publish — meant to close gender and racial wage gaps — are in “good faith,” meaning that employers may continue, as they are entitled, to consider key hiring factors . These include the labor market, an applicant’s experience, skills and, for remote positions, the job location’s cost of living.
“There are some jobs for which the range could vary dramatically,” Camacho Moran says. “There’s a little bit of formula and experience, and a little bit of guesswork in what they will have to pay to attract talent.
“There is no restriction on the employer,” she continues. “If they post it in good faith, they could pay more. The cautionary tale for the employer is you can’t do that all the time.”
Here is a sampling of what top New York corporations are paying, as of Nov. 1, 2022:
Not all companies have complied with the new law yet, including Google, Meta and IBM.
Google and Meta did not immediately return a request for comment from Fortune at the time of publication .
An IBM spokesperson emailed the response: “IBM recognizes the value and importance of wage transparency and, beginning November 1, will include pay ranges for all new U.S. job postings.”
